Welcome to our blog! We are Lorena and Ilenia and we are the Book Sisters.
We like reading books, comics, mangas and webtoons. Our shelves are filling on a daily and our bank accounts emptying at the same rate.
We want to share our thoughts and opinions of books we have read with you, along with the occasional fun fact about a book or an author, playlists that match a book, and some of our favourite quotes.
Here's a little bit about ourselves.
Hi I am Ilenia and I am the eldest. I started properly liking reading when I was 9, but as a child I loved reading Mickey Mouse comics. I am a workaholic who loves programming, vector art, 3D modelling and writing.
My favourite genres: fantasy, sci-fi, young adult, mystery and classics.
My favourite format: series, with pretty hardcovers.
My favourite authors: basically all the authors of my favourite books, which are a lot.
(Some of) My favourite series: The Chronicles of Narnia, the whole of the Riordan verse, the Grishaverse, Renegades, the Lunar Chronicles, the Maze Runner, the Hunger Games, Divergent, Red Queen, The Witcher
My favourite standalones: The Song of Achilles, Ace of Spades, Looking for Alaska, the Da Vinci code, Daisy Jones and the Six, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Behind closed doors...
Honestly, we’d be here all day if I listed all my favourite books!
I like to organise my bookshelves based on how emotionally attached I am to a book and its characters, but my sister forced me to organise them by colour to make our room aesthetic.
I am happy to share my favourite books with you and I hope you’ll find a book that sparks your interest into reading, like it happened to me.
What’s roasting, little poulets? I’m Lorena, the youngest sister and also newer to reading.
Up until now, I’ve always read fanfictions, mangas and webtoons. I rarely read novels and when I did, I would not finish them.
It was not always like this since my parents always encouraged my sister and I to read at a young age and I genuinely liked it but after we moved to the UK, I was discouraged because I didn’t know how to speak or read in English.
After a while, my primary teacher, who was very patient and also believed in me, helped me go back into reading with ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’ by Roald Dahl.
Needless to say, this quickly became my comfort book because of how easily I could understand the writing and the plot. For the first time, I felt fluent in English which definitely sparked something in me.
As the years went, I read more books such as Harry Potter, Maze Runner and the Hunger Games, which were all kindly suggested by my primary teacher. As you can tell, this teacher was very important to me and my reading journey.
From year 6 on, something went wrong and I could not find any book that I liked or I simply had not the time to read.(Honestly this is bullshit, I was just too lazy and caught up with whatever an 11 year old is)
Then secondary started and I enjoyed writing but hated the thought of reading. I preferred something that didn’t take long to read and if I did find it, I would constantly judge the writing style because I wanted to find excuses to why I didn’t like reading.
Looking back, I did enjoy reading because I had no problem sucking up a 200K words fanfiction on AO3 in one night and making powerpoints of my love of Shakespeare’s plays while also keeping up with 20 weekly webtoons. The only reason surprisingly was the person which created the Blog : Ilenia.
Don’t get me wrong, I love her and she did nothing wrong but I was strongly insecure about the amount of reading she did compared to me and how much praise she got from it. I was jealous therefore I reflected that anger on books and thought that I just wasn’t the ‘reading type’ and rather the weird anime/kpop obsessed teenager.
More recently, I decided that I wasted time by putting on the side my love of reading and went to a book shop with my sister. I found the excuse of wanting to find a new manga to collect (In fact I did buy Jojo) so I went inside of this 6-floored book shop and went around searching.
I was immediately attracted to this rom-com book which wasn’t a surprise because of my undeniable love for romance movies and anime. This book was ‘The love hypothesis’ by Ali Hazelwood.
As somebody that at the young age of 10 found comfort in reading fanfictions about y/n and Henry danger, (I am still crying at night for how cringe I was, please believe me when I say I am healed from my wattpad and y/n phase) the fake dating trope definitely brought back memories of younger me laughing at books on my bed while listening to my first playlist on Spotify which only consisted of Shinee, BTS and Melanie Martinez.
I forgot how nice it felt to be excited about a book and looking forward to read it. It took one word for me to be caught up in the rabbit whole again. I read this book in less that 3 days (which for me half of a 200 pages book took 1 month to read)and couldn't stop talking about it.
Then, I realised the only way to heal my heart from that built up anger was to try to start reading again and I can say that I am slowly getting better at accepting that it was very childish to stop reading because of constant backlash from relatives.
I have now read 21 books from January 8th 2022 which was definitely a lot more than I have in years.
According to the app the tracks my books, so far in 2022:
My favourite genres: romance, Comics, LGBTQIA+, Contemporary, Young adult, Manga, Thriller, Science-Fiction, Horror.
(As you can tell I am trying a lot of different genres)
My favourite books: ( I will update after I get further in my reading journey. You can check on our Instagram @itsthebooksisters)
My Favourite webtoons: Siren’s lament, Where Tangents meet, Freaking romance, Shadow, Heartstopper, Lore Olympus, Castle Swimmer, Save Me, My Deepest Secret, Sweet Home, Of Dark Lord and Cabbages, That Awkward Magic, About Death, Edith, LMLY, High Class Homos.
As you can tell I am very passionate about webtoons and these are just a few ones which I mostly followed and enjoyed all throughout. (I have plenty more but Ilenia told me to stop or I would write too much. I had to narrow my list by a lot)
My Favourite manga (mostly watched the anime): The disastrous Life of Saiki K, Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, One Piece, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, JoJo’s bizzare adventures, A silent voice, Banana Fish, Yuri on Ice, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Your name.
Again, you can tell that in my life, manga/anime were the only thing that kept me from going crazy and killing everyone. :)
We hope to inspire you to read new and exciting books, and that we spend good time together. Thank you for taking the time to read this post: we really appreciate it!
